Beyond Blarney and Bunratty lies a landscape dotted with over 30,000 castle sites. We've mapped the most atmospheric ruins and forgotten tower houses for curious explorers.

Why Seek Out Hidden Castles?

Ireland has more castle ruins per square kilometre than almost anywhere in Europe. While the famous sites draw crowds, the real magic lies in stumbling upon a 14th-century tower house at the end of a farm lane, or exploring a cliff-top fortress with only sheep for company.

Respect the ruins: Many hidden castles are on private land or unprotected sites. Stay on public paths, don't climb unstable walls, and leave no trace.

Planning Your Castle Road Trip

  1. Choose a region: The Midlands and west coast have the highest density of accessible ruins.
  2. Check access: Some castles are OPW heritage sites (ticketed); others are free but unmaintained.
  3. Combine with pubs: Every good castle day ends in a village pub — see our Galway pub guide.
  4. Photography: Early morning and overcast days create the most atmospheric shots.
